“Happy Reading #17”

Writing a book review often feels like sitting on a high horse, looking down on books that were researched, written, and published by real people. Because of this, my reviews are always centered on what a book left me feeling, how it inspired me, or whether I would recommend it. I truly believe that every book finds its reader and that every writer who accomplishes getting a book published deserves applause.

So, when I finished reading The Things We Nver Say by Elizabeth Strout, I had to write a poem—because when inspiration strikes, you grab the opportunity. (Do not read any further if you haven’t read the book yet!) Overall, I gave it 3.25 stars; it is definitely worth reading at least once.

The Things We Never Say

To be worded

Is to give it power.

Let it sit,

It slowly fades away—

Making a home in the mind

While taking walks around the heart.

Things need not be told.

Say them to yourself

In your mind,

Slowly burning each feeling they arouse.

Ashes now,

Things we do not care about.

Secrets we hold,

Feeling the emotions,

Embracing their hunger.

Mine are too dark—

Keep them in and no one will judge.

Things needn’t be told.

When tears go unnoticed,

Flushed cheeks are misread,

Dark circles define only age.

Too little, too late—

Things that don’t matter anymore.
